The last person standing in the way of Samantha Stosur is Francesca Schiavone of Italy. Francesca Schiavone ranked 17 in the world had to get past tournament 2nd seed Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark in the quarterinfals, and then was gifted a place in the finals when fifth seed Elena Dementieva had to retire in the semifinals due to a calf injury, following a tightly contested tiebreaker in the first set won by Schiavone.
Both Samantha Stosur and Francesca Schiavone are gunning for their first career grand slam title. For Francesca Schiavone, it could be a bit more historic since there hasn't been an Italian grand slam champion since 1976 when Adriano Panatta won the French Open. Francesca Schiavone could also be the first player outside of the top ten seeds to win a grand slam since 1993.
However, making history is a tough call against the streaking Samantha Stosur, who enters the 2010 French Open Finals as a favorite over Francesca Schiavone. Samantha Stosur was seeded 7th, and Francesca Schiavone was seeded 17th. Those are the odds right there. Go figure.
