The Asian Poker Tour has come up with a leaderboard rankings based on performances in APT accredited events. Corresponding points were given to those who finished in the money for the APT events, and the top finishers in the leaderboard rankings would eventually win some prizes. The top 50 players in town for the APT Main Event also get to play a special tournament prior to the event in order to win a $2,700 seat to the APT Main Event. So far, I'm ranked 101st in the Asian Poker Tour. I earned my points by making the money in the Resorts World Manila Inaugural Poker Tournament, where I placed 24th in a field of 269 players. It was a good tournament run for me, except for one crucial mistake near the bubble where I misread my opponent's hand, and called with a mid-pair, costing almost my entire stack. I survived the bubble with 28 players to go, and managed to double up enough to place 24th. It could've been deeper except for that mistake, and I was really disappointed, but no use crying over it. With that place, I managed to get 400 points, and I was ranked 88 in the APT leaderboard rankings. I had an opportunity to increase my place in the APT rankings when I played at the The Poker Circuit's Wet N'Wild tournament played in the Wild Aces Poker Sports Club in Angeles City, Pampanga. I managed to make day 2 with a healthy stack, but sadly went out in the first level of Day 2 with my two pair getting outdrawn to the higher two pair of the monster stack. Since I didnt' make the money, I failed to earn points, and my ranking slipped to 101. The other APT events were held in Macau, and sadly I didn't have the time to make the trip from Manila to Macau to compete. I'm hoping that a few more tournaments are held in Manila prior to the APT Main Event. The Asian Poker Tour main event will be held on August 23-29, 2010 at the Resorts World Manila with a buy-in of $2500 +$250. The APT Philippines Main Event promises a guaranteed prize of $2 Million dollars.

UFC Light Heavyweight Championship: Rashad Evans vs Shogun Rua
Mauricio Shogun Rua scored a huge knockout win over Lyoto Machida to win the UFC Light Heavyweight Championship in UFC 113.
Rashad Evans scored a huge win over Rampage Jackson in their grudge match in UFC 114 to earn a title shot against Mauricio Shogun Rua. So far no date has been set, but the anticipation for a Shogun Rua vs Rashad Evans UFC fight is already in the air.
Shogun Rua was really impressive in his win over Lyoto Machida, scoring a huge KO. Rashad Evans was in pretty good shape against a much slower Rampage Jackson, but really wasn't quite as impressive, considering that Rampage Jackson was able to rock Rashad Evans and almost even scored a knockout in the third round. However, Rashad Evans showed some resilience and was able to recover to finish the fight, and even score some take downs. Undoubtedly, it was Rashad Evans who was in better shape and conditioning, showing his ability to withstand the onslaught of Rampage Jackson.
However, when it comes time to fight Shogun Rua, it might be a different story. has shown the ability to last five championships rounds as witnessed in his first attempt to go up against Lyoto Machida when Machida won a controversial decision. Of course, Shogun Rua has also shown that he has some huge knock out power, and the ability to withstand tough hits.
Rashad Evans also has some of that knock out power as seen in the way he's KOed Chuck Liddell and Forest Griffin. But that hasn't happened in his recent fights. Meanwhile, Shogun Rua has KOed his last three opponents, including Mark Coleman, Chuck Liddell and Lyoto Machida. In fact, most of Shogun Rua's wins in his mixed martial arts career has been via KO or TKO.
Certainly, it'll be an interesting match up with the explosive wrestling take downs of Rashad Evans and the KO power and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu of Shogun Rua. For the record - I'm cheering for Shogun Rua to knock out Rashad Evans. To put it straight - I just don't like Rashad Evans.

2010 NBA Finals: It's Monumental LA Lakers vs Boston Celtics
When the Boston Celtics were playing the Cleveland Cavaliers and the Los Angeles Lakers were about to sweep the Utah Jazz, I already predicted the classic monumental NBA Finals rivalry with the Los Angeles Lakers vs the Boston Celtics.
Well, the Boston Celtics shut up MVP Lebron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers, and got past the Orlando Magic in convincing fashion to earn their spot in the 2010 NBA Finals. Well done indeed for the Boston Celtics.
The Phoenix Suns made a fight of it, and the Steve Nash and Amare Stoudemire combo was really impressive, but the Los Angeles Lakers really knew how to get the job done, and closed the game out in Game 6, winning it away in Phoenix to earn their spot in the 2010 NBA Finals.
So it's the classic monumental NBA rivalry of Green vs Purple, Boston vs LA.
Of course, the Los Angeles Lakers will have the home court advantage of Game 7, should the series go the distance, and with a better regular season record, it looks like the Los Angeles Lakers are the clear favorites. Personally, I'm cheering for the Los Angeles Lakers. I've been a fan since the Magic Johnson vs Larry Bird rivalry, and I suppose I do have a purple heart deep inside.
But then, for the love of the sport, I want it to be a close series. I don't expect anything less from a great rivalry. In terms of the betting, not all my bets will be for the Lakers. I would bet on the Boston Celtics to at least defend their home turf. Well, depending on the spread. I'd also lay bets against Kobe Bryant scoring 30+ or more. That's just not going to happen with the Boston Celtics defense.
And then, there are the match ups. I'd like to see Kobe Bryant take on Rajon Rondo on defense with Derrick Fisher chasing Ray Allen through screens. Ron Artest on Paul Pierce. Lamar Odom on Kevin Garnett. Pau Gasol on Kendrick Perkins. It's all about the match-ups, and who maintains their composure, and who can play a solid game.
With the intensity displayed by both the Los Angeles Lakers and Boston Celtics throughout the NBA Playoffs, I wouldn't be surprised if it does go the stretch of 7 games. But, in the end, I'm hoping the defending champion LA Lakers will have a repeat.
Stanley Cup Betting: Let's Go Chicago Blackhawks!
The 2010 Stanley Cup Finals features the Chicago Blackhawks vs the Philadelphia Flyers.
I'm one of the few Filipinos I know that enjoys hockey, and even once upon a time used to play it on the snowy streets of Buffalo, New York. Being from Buffalo, I was naturally a Buffalo Sabres fan at the time of hockey greats Gilbert Perreault, Dave Andreychuck, Mike Foligno, Pat LaFontaine and Rob Ray just to name a few.
I haven't followed the NHL over the years since the Asian sports channels NEVER show any hockey. But thanks to online streaming, I've been able to catch a few hockey games here and there, and especially since it's now the 2010 Stanley Cup Playoffs.
I followed the playoffs to watch the Buffalo Sabres, and was heartbroken when the Boston Bruins knocked them out in the conference quarterfinals.
Anyway - now it's the 2010 Stanley Cup Finals - and I'm cheering for the Chicago Blackhawks to win the Stanley Cup. Why? Well, the Chicago Blackhawks haven't won a Stanley Cup in 49 years since 1962, and they could certainly use one to end their drought. Apart from that, the Chicago Blackhawks swept the San Jose Sharks in the Western Conference Finals. The San Jose Sharks were the number one seed, and had the best record in the Western Conference.
I have some respect for the Philadelphia Flyers as well. The Flyers were able to come back down 3-0 in the series against the Boston Bruins in order to survive and win. The Philadelphia Flyers are the third team in the history of the NHL to come back from 3-0 in a seven-game series. So props to the Flyers for their resilience.
However, in the 2010 Stanley Cup Finals - the home court advantage of a game 7 goes to the Chicago Blackhawks since they ended the regular season with a better record. And if the home court advantage is an edge, then the edge will go to the Chicago Blackhawks for certain.
Next, I just like the players of the Chicago Blackhawks - Jonathan Toews, Patrick Kane and Patrick Sharp have been playing solid. Jonathan Toews leads all skaters in points for the 2010 Stanley Cup Playoffs. Of course, their goalkeeper Antti Niemi has been remarkable.
The Philadelphia Flyers has some pretty solid players with Daniel Briere and Claud Giraux, plus a better statistical keeper with Michael Leighton.
But like I said, I'm all for history, and I'm all for the Chicago Blackhawks ending a 49 year drought for a Stanley Cup. That win would be sweet.
Definitely it will be a battle!

F1 Turkey Grand Prix Betting: Can Mark Webber Make It Three In A Row?
The qualifying stage for the 2010 F1 Turkey Grand Prix at Istanbul just ended, and Mark Webber of Red Bull Renault snatched pole position with Lewis Hamilton of McLaren-Mercedes just right behind in the second spot. Sebastian Vettel of Red Bull Renault bags the third spot on the grid with Jenson Button of McLaren-Mercedes just behind on the 4th spot.
It's Mark Webber's fourth pole position in qualifying in six races, and he's already won two races in Spain and most recently in Monaco. Certainly, Mark Webber will be a heavy favorite to make it three staight, and extend his lead in the F1 World Drivers Championship standings. With everything falling into place for Mark Webber, it certainly looks likely that Mark Webber CAN make it three in a row with a win in Istanbul.
I'm personally excited to see what Michael Schumacher of Mercedes GP will be able to do as he starts the race in 5th position. The Mercedes GP car might not be as fast the Red Bull Renault or the McLaren-Mercedes, but certainly the former F1 World Champion could give the young guns up front a run for their money should they commit some costly errors.
The performance of Ferrari has been quite disappointing with Felipe Massa sitting all the way back at 8th spot on the grid and Fernando Alonso way back in the 12th slot. Perhaps Fernando Alonso might go up a few spots to earn some points, but it's almost improbable for him to drive his way to a podium finish in the 2010 F1 Turkey Grand Prix.
My money's on Mark Webber to win it.
Jonathany16 of Iloilo City Is An Idiot
I just met an idiot in Pokerstars while playing one of the phase one online freeroll qualifiers for the Filipino Poker Tour 14 Main Event.
Sitting short-stacked with less than 1k in chips against a table, averaging maybe 3k, I sit on the BB with AQ off. Almost everyone limps in, and I shove all-in. Jonathany16 sits UTG and makes the insta-call with A6 off. I flop top pair Q and two pair the A on the turn to double up, and I remark "A6?"
After folding for two rounds, I decide to make a play, and this is what happens:

UFC Betting: Rampage Over Rashad
UFC 114 kicks off tomorrow, and the main event of Rampage Quinton Jackson vs Rashad Evans is one fight that UFC fans have been waiting for. Personally, I've been wanting to see that fight ever since the Rashad and Rampage were mouthing off during Ultimate Fighter: Heavyweights. In fact, I thought the two would go at it right there.
But anyway, the fight is going to happen. Dana White said on his Twitter that the weigh-in was sick and really intense with one of the sickest stare downs ever. I can imagine. Rampage and Rashad hate each other, and it will definitely be a battle.
Personally, I'm picking Rampage Jackson to win over Rashad Evans. Rampage has never been knocked out, except for earlier in his career in Pride, but that was when they used knees and soccer kicks to finish matches. In the UFC, Rampage only lost once via a unanimous decision to Forrest Griffin, losing his UFC Light Heavyweight Championship in the process. Rashad Evans, in the meantime, may have won his last fight against Thiago Silva, but it wasn't that impressive. I still remember him getting KOed by Lyoto Machida, where he lost his title. That was nice, and it showed his vulnerability.
As for the other fights on the card for UFC114, I'm hoping Dan Miller steps up to beat Michael Bisping. I'd also put money on Antonio Nogueira to win over Jason Brilz, and for Diego Sanchez to score a big win over John Hathaway.
Can Rampage KO Rashad? Oh, I'm hoping he does, so he shuts him up forever.
Steaming For A Seat To The Filipino Poker Tour 14 Main Event
The Filipino Poker Tour 14 is coming soon, and as early as now (May '10), they've already starting throwing daily online freeroll qualifiers at Pokerstars. Each day, Pokerstars hosts three multi-table tournaments with the top 5 of each tournament getting to advance to a Phase 2 tournament. In the Phase 2 Tournament of The Filipino Poker Tour 14, the top two eventually win a seat to The Filipino Poker Tour 14, which will be held in June 25, 2010. The seat is worth Php11,000 (10,000+1,000), which is affordable in my bankroll, but of course, getting it for free by winning it online is also a juicy prospect.
I've been playing The Filipino Poker Tour Phase 1 almost every night, and in the numerous times I've attempted to get to Phase 2, I've succeeded 4 times. I played my first Phase 2 tournament on May 17, and managed a 21st place finish out of 98. It was a good run, but very short of coming in the top 2. For the May 24 Phase 2 event, I gave one of my seats to my poker buddy Mikee Carrion and we both played the tournament. I came out at a disappointing 85th out of 96 while Mikee survived long enough until the 20th spot. I have one more Phase 2 event coming up on May 31st, and I'm hoping that the third time is the charm. In the meantime, I'll try to win some more Phase 2 seats by competing in the daily freeroll satellites.
The difficult thing about getting to the top 5 of the FPT 14 freeroll is to survive the early level onslaught of all-in pre-flop pushes. I'm a player who likes to see the flop and get a clear decision on how to play my hand, and I don't want to get caught in a coin toss just pushing all-in against other stacks. More often than not, I maintain patience and hopefully push with the best of it, but poker is not a sure thing, and more often than not even pocket aces can get cracked by some trash hand.
Usually, if the math holds up in my favor and the luck falls my way, and I make the most of it, it's a breeze to get through. In the meantime, I have to get stuck with idiots who would call an all-in push with something mediocre like Q-9 off-suite and my strong-looking big slick suited gets crushed when the 9 of clubs takes 4 cards to make a flush.
I tend to be unkind to the idiots and lash out at them at the chatbox for playing idiotic hands. I may be rude, but I don't need to be friends with these idiots and morons, who play poker like they would blackjack - f+cking fish that they are. But anyway - I don't wish to waste anymore energy getting pissed at them. Some have promised to confront me at the Metro if they see me there, maybe even a bit of violence. Oh well, what can I say? The idiot has to defend his idiocy with more idiotic behavior. Woo-zaaaah.
Anyway if you see me at Pokerstars, and I lash out at you - you probably deserve more than that. I don't hide behind a screen name. My name is right there - JJDuque - and if you pay attention, you could learn some great things about how to play poker.
New Dawn
I'm at it again. When I started playing poker seriously around 5 years ago, I maintained a blog about poker, where I would talk about the slow-growing Manila poker scene (which was nothing yet at all!) and the small success I had in taking part of it as a player and as an organizer of tournaments. Back then, when it was starting out, a lot of players were looking for books to read, or discuss hands and strategies, or just where to find a game. So I created a sort of journal about my own experiences as a student of poker in the hopes that it would help others like me who were starting out.
Now - the Manila poker scene, and in fact the Philippine poker scene has boomed with more than a dozen poker rooms, daily tournaments and 24/7 poker action. Even I have a hard time trying to keep pace with what's going on. But then, I'm not starting to blog again just to keep up with the updates and announcements. There's also a lot of that. I'm writing again as sort of a therapy, to be able to write about my game and how it fares with the scene, whether it be in the poker rooms of the Philippines or online.
So far - it's been a roller coaster ride. I've had some good stories, and I've had some sob stories. But no time to dwell on what's in the past. It's time to just focus on moving forward and keeping it together. I'll consider this first post as a fresh start in my poker journey. Bankroll reset, and let the games begin, and hopefully the posts to follow will have a lot of positive things to say about some positive outcomes. Of course, it's not all going to be about poker. I'll also include posts on some of my favorite things like sports betting among other things. And thus the title, Pokerism et al. Hopefully, it'll be inspiring and entertaining.
Anyway - to quote a Nina Simone song - "It's a new dawn, it's a new day, it's a new life for me, and I'm feeling good."
